Peer Review
Research on peer review practices, effectiveness, and implementation in writing classrooms.
Implications for peer-review: The study indicates that instruction was given on how the peer review process should be conducted, but there are no specific details on this instructional component in the article. What is the relationship between teaching peer review and providing a rubric students can read/follow? Also, I was intrigued by the parts of the article that suggest peer review helps offset the emotional labor of giving/receiving feedback between faculty and students.
Implications for peer-review: To help students to form useful mental models of their readers, feedback should focus on making visible that gap between writers intentions and readers interpretations, needs, and expectations. Over time, students who are continuously confronted with the "interpretive gap" will become better at predicting and addressing readers' needs and expectations. This research gives scientific backing to Sommer's principles.
Questions: How to train students to provide one another with this kind of feedback?
The majority of the students (68%), through their survey comments, reported that reviewing resulted in their reflecting back on their own work and/or in their transferring ideas generated through the reviewing process to inform that work as the following extracts show.
Implications for peer-review: This suggests we place high value on peer-review, not only because students benefit from feedback, but also (and perhaps primarily) because generating feedback helps students become better at self-assessment. Students who learn principles of effective feedback will benefit the most. (See Sommers and Kellogg.)
Questions: Remembering that the goal of peer-review is improved self-assessment skills, how might we do it differently to maximize these benefits? More opportunities for peer review? More training?
Implications for peer-review: Students should follow the same principles as professors when providing feedback.
Questions: What might it look like to train students in these principles, and perhaps even give and receive feedback on their feedback?
Implications for peer-review: The research might imply that we should give students time and space in class to coordinate and synthesize all the feedback they're receiving from peers and faculty, but also combine this with the self-assessment that results from exposure to classmate's work. Norming activities can help students to develop their assessment skills, including self assessment. These practices are also aligned with Kellogg's research, in that these activities are likely to help students formulate accurate mental models of their readers.

Abstract: As artificial intelligence (AI) became a part of daily life, it has become important to determine user competence in using AI technology. Here, we propose the concept of AI literacy and develop a quantitative scale for obtaining accurate data regarding the AI literacy of ordinary users. We first identified the primary core constructs of AI literacy, including awareness, use, evaluation, and ethics. Next, we generated 65 items to capture these four constructs; only 31 items were retained after a three-step content validation process. Then, we conducted a survey, and collected two samples of data. By reducing the number of items using the first sample and performing reliability and validity tests on the second sample, we obtained a 12-item instrument for the quantitative measurement of AI literacy. The results confirmed that the proposed four-construct model is an adequate representation of AI literacy. Further, AI literacy is significantly related to digital literacy, attitude towards robots, and users' daily usage of AI. This study will not only aid researchers in understanding how user competence in using AI technology affects human–AI interactions but will also help designers develop AI applications that are aligned with the AI literacy levels of the target users.
